Thanks to the enthusiastic support of many colleges and universities throughout our State, the vision of Study New York, Inc. has been realized. A wide range of New York's public and private colleges and universities gathered on October 23, 2009 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York for "Founders Day." Below are the minutes from the meeting, presentations and letter from Governor David Patterson.
Since the initial meeting in Brooklyn in November 2008, a pro tempore Board of Directors has been working with the original steering committee to bring Study New York to fruition. In addition to drafting formal bylaws and filing incorporation and tax-exemption documents, the Board has worked to shape the activities and future direction of the consortium with the member institutions' needs in mind.
An informal team of colleagues from government and academia originally gathered to brainstorm strategies to create a "Study New York" marketing initiative in order to attract more international students to our State. After several formative meetings, national best practices were reviewed and a list of potential activities for the consortium was outlined. The pro tempore Board of Directors collaborated with a variety of constituencies during this process, including the New York State Governor's Office, the NYS Department of Economic Development, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, the State University of New York, the City University of New York, and the law firm of Vinson & Elkins, our general counsel.
The mission of Study New York is to position New York State as the destination of choice for students from around the world, thereby improving the visibility and global competitiveness of the State’s institutions of higher learning, and expanding the State’s services exports. Specific goals include collective work to develop, promote, and distribute marketing materials that serve the common needs of all members, to collaborate on international student recruitment events and to deploy web-based tools to support and advance such activities.
