In 1992, the State terminated its monopoly over the operations of the Port of Montevideo and introduced it to private services. Commercial competition propelled growth in activity, improvement of services, and an increase in new traffic. Major international investments in Uruguay’s forestry sector have created the need for new and modern ports along the Uruguay River and on the Atlantic Ocean. This report reviews the structure of the Uruguayan ports & ships sector from the perspective of its potential U.S. exports.
