$355 Million Contract for New International Airport Awarded
A new international airport facility will be constructed at La Mercy, near Durban in the Kwazulu-Natal Province of South Africa. The project, which is estimated to cost at least $355 million, was awarded to the Ilembe Consortium on December 18, 2006. The South African daily newspaper Business Day reported in its December 19, 2006 issue that the successful consortium is headed by Group Five http://www.g5.co.za/ and WBHO Construction (http://www.wbho.co.za/ ).
New Airport to be Completed in Time for 2010 World Cup. Speed of completion was said to be an important factor in the tendering process, as the airport must be fully functional in advance of the FIFA (Soccer) World Cup in 2010 – which will be held in venues throughout South Africa, including Durban.
The new airport will also include a tradeport incorporating agrizones, a cyberport, an electronics trading port and light manufacturing. The Dube Tradeport company will own, manage and develop the tradeport as well as the cargo handling terminals at the airport.
Aside from the passenger numbers expected in conjunction with the 2010 World Cup, a significant force behind the decision to build the new airport has been recent positive growth in the number of passengers using the existing Durban International Airport (DIA). Passenger growth at DIA has doubled over the last two years from two million to four million passengers per year.
