Clean Technology Initiative

The United States Commercial Service (US Department of Commerce) is pleased to announce an active program to promote the export of US clean technology, products and services.  In addition to the calendar of events listed below, we will be co-hosting regular “Greening Asia Clean Technology Forums” in cooperation with the California Asia Business Council.  These forums will disseminate intelligence on clean technology market developments in Asia, and will serve to coordinate international market development activities among critical stakeholders.  For more information on these gatherings or any of the events listed in the calendar, please contact Stephan Crawford at 415-705-2301

What is "Clean Technology"?

"Clean Technology” is defined as ‘technology that optimizes the use of resources while reducing ecological impacts and delivering solid economic performance’. Clean technology covers a broad scope of industries, including those related to energy, water, materials (including green chemistry), transportation and design/planning.

Converging Factors Are Creating Opportunities . . . .

A number of economic and policy factors are driving the now explosive growth in the clean technology sector, including long-term energy price projections and supply security, recent advances in critical technologies (such as energy technology and nano-technology), developing regulatory regimes, growing consumer demand for more innovative products, opportunities for profit through greater efficiencies, and growing raw materials scarcity in some industries. As a result, the sector has seen a massive infusion of capital over the past several years.  Clean technology is now the third largest venture capital category overall, with major investment banks and funds making significant commitments in the sector—including California’s public pension fund, CalPERS.

For U.S. Clean Tech Companies in Overseas Markets

Industry sources see international markets as being critical to the growth of the sector in the United States.  Opportunities exist for US cleantech firms in may countries around the globe.  Watch this space for information on upcoming international business development events for clean tech firms.

  • Eco Expo Asia 2008 - October 27-30, 2008 - Hong Kong:

Hong Kong has won international acclaim for its commitment to environmental protection and is recognized by many as a regional leader in the field of environment protection. Hong Kong’s environmental technology market has grown due to the city's investment of resources to tackle air pollution, water pollution and solid waste treatment problems. Owing to the imminent need to extend the life of existing landfills and construct a new Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility, solid waste management solutions and technologies will absorb the most in terms of Government expenditure on the environment in the next few years.

The majority of Hong Kong’s wastewater undergoes primary treatment provided through the Harbor Area Treatment Scheme (HATS). Stage 2A of HATS, which the Hong Kong Government is embarking on, requires the provision of additional disinfection, the construction of sewage tunnels and expansion of existing chemical treatment capacity. The Hong Kong Government will consider moving Stage 2B forward in 2008, which requires the installation of biological treatment facilities.

To tackle Hong Kong’s regional air pollution problem, the Government has been working with local power plants and the authorities in Guangdong (the province across the border) to cut emissions of major air pollutants before 2010. Clean manufacturing and desulphurization / denitrification technologies will continue be sought after in Hong Kong and Southern China.
