Foreign Trade Barriers: An Insight into Stanards in Trade from an HQ and ODO Field Perspective

The U.S. Commercial Service's Office of Professional Development (OPD), in conjunction with Office of Domestic Operations(ODO) and the Office of the ITA Standards Liaison, is offering a Webinar training for ODO staff that have client counseling and trade promotion responsibilities.  The session will cover standards and conformity assessment issues. 

The session will focus on standards in trade, technical barriers to trade and trade agreements, general information on standards and conformance, FAQs, standards development, how to handle market access concerns for standards barriers, real-life examples, provide valuable insights into how to identify issues, as well as resources and support for staff and their clients.  

Presenters:

  • Jennifer Stradtman: Standards Specialist, Office of the ITA Standards Liaison
  • Barbara Lapini: International Trade Specialist, Trade Information Center (TIC)

Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role and impact of standards in trade
  • Explain the basics of standards development
  • Identify potential standards issues
  • Answer FAQs staff or their clients might have
  • Identify useful resources, tools, and contacts
  • Provide basic education to clients on how to obtain assistance with standards and conformity issues (i.e. product marks, etc)
