Slow but Steady Private Healthcare Market Growth
For over 50 years the state has been the main health care provider in Poland. Never perfect, it has undergone many changes over the years. The National Health Fund or NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia; www.nfz.gov.pl) is its current structure operating in Poland. It is collecting 9% of every Polish employee’s salary. Recent problems with the public healthcare system, however, have increased demand for an alternative, private healthcare system. While the public system still delivers the majority of all medical services in Poland, the private healthcare market is growing at a robust rate. In 2008, the market increased by 13%, reaching a value of 26 billion PLN (approximately $10.8 billion). Future growth may slow to about 7-11% due to changes in certain healthcare laws and the global financial crisis.
Because of this situation, experts predict gradual, but steady growth in all segments of the private healthcare market in Poland from 2010-2011. Demand has steadily increased for quality, private healthcare services including rehabilitation, diagnostic services, doctor visits, and hospitalization. Costs can be paid either directly by the patient, through employers who purchase licenses from private healthcare providers, or from insurance companies offering private healthcare options. The $10.8 market value also includes medicine and medical equipment paid directly by patients.
As demand for private medical services continues to grow, Poles will seek more innovative treatments and expect the quality of the services they receive to steadily improve as well. Due to these trends, we invite U.S. medical equipment manufacturers and medical service suppliers to examine the opportunities in the Polish market.
