MINExpo 2008: Ukraine
- Mining industry in Ukraine is one of the main sectors of
economy. Coal mining constitutes more than 5% of total production
volume in Ukraine, and 95% of total reserves of organic fuel. The
volume of Ukrainian coal reserves equals to 117,5 billion
tons. Most of Ukrainian mines are more than 600m deep,
which makes exploitation very difficult. The existing
technologies and equipment are extremely outdated, since most of
the mines are more than 50 years old.
- Ukraine has the world's tenth largest coal-bed methane
reserves, which by conservative estimates are 1.7 trillion cubic
meters. Total methane emissions from Ukraine's coal mines are
about 2.0 billion cubic meters a year, of which only seven
percent are captured and put to use. For the period of 2005-2008
coal bed methane recovery is expected to increase up to 3-4
billion cubic meters a year and further double within each 5
years, reaching 12-16 billion cubic meters per year after
2010-2015.
- U.S. firms will be competitive for providing high-end mining
equipment and advanced technologies for modernization and
development of Ukrainian coal mines.
