Morocco is, by tradition, a mining country: mining and related activities accounted for about 6% of national production in 2002. Morocco is also the number one phosphates exporter in the world and the 3rd largest producer.
The government is now considering foreign joint ventures opportunities, indicating the willingness of the country to open up its mining sector further. Forecasts show the Moroccan mining industry will register an average growth rate of 4.6% between 2008 and 2012 and be valued at over US$2.4bn by 2012.
