This unit will further enhance Petron’s capability to meet more stringent gasoline quality requirements under the Philippine Clean Air Act, while providing the company with the aromatic petrochemicals, BTX, which it can sell to domestic and regional markets. The USTDA grant will supplement the resources that Petron is allocating for the study.

The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment. C Trade's Renewable Energy and Livelihood Project Launched in RP

A power generator that uses solar and wind energy may soon enable Philippine fishing villages without electricity to refrigerate their catch and pack it with ice for transport to the market at low cost.

The generator would also be an alternative for communities burdened with the high cost of operating fuel-fed generators or with the “importation” of ice blocks from the nearest city.

Non-polluting and highly favored by the tropical Philippine climate, the new technology is seen to bolster local livelihood development and the government’s poverty reduction program.

This project, which should lead to the widespread use of this technology in the Philippines, was launched by Arizona-based C Trade, working in cooperation with the U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

Dr. Prabhu Dayal, president of C Trade, noted that many small fishing villages waste their catch because of lack of electricity and refrigeration facilities, or because transporting ice or fuel for power generators are difficult and expensive.

C Trade is coordinating with the Department of Energy, as well as with nongovernmental organizations such as Sibol ng Agham at Teknolohiya (SIBAT) to identify a remote off-grid fishing community in the Philippines as a pilot site for the project.

Assisted by the Arizona Department of Commerce, the pilot project was granted funding by the U.S. Council of State Governments (CSG) through its State Environmental Initiative (SEI) program. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through the U.S.-Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP) is funding the SEI program. SEI awards matching grants to U.S. states to link American expertise in environmental management, policy and technology with Asian demand for environmental improvements. (April 2004)
