Peru follows Brazil and Argentina as the third largest country in the region and is the fourth most populated with 27 million inhabitants. Lima, the capital, is Peru’s economic and industrial center accounting for 70% of the GDP. With over 7 million inhabitants, Lima is headquarters for almost all major local and foreign companies.
The food and beverage processing, packaging and packing industry in Peru is one of the most dynamic industrial sectors of the country. The total market for food and beverage processing and packaging equipment in Peru totaled US$ 73.5 million in 2004, and US$ 80.5 million in 2005. A 6.1% increase in imports is anticipated for the foreseeable future (2006-2008).
There is an increasing need for new packaging and packing technologies and materials (speacially for frozen food), and radio frequency ID (RFID) devices. U.S. suppliers should be aware of these business opportunities.
ENVASE ALIMENTEK PERU 2009 is the most important international trade fair in the Peruvian packaging industry, hosting over 200 exhibitors from 14 different sectors, including packaging manufacturers, raw materials suppliers, packaging machines and equipment distributors, and logistics and storage service companies.
