From the Inside & Out: Federal and Foreign Tax

Hosted by the ILS, with wine provided by Perkins Coie LLP
Tax, legal and accounting professionals from Microsoft,
Louisiana-Pacific, Tektronix, Grant Thornton and Moss Adams will
discuss international tax and accounting issues that confront
U.S. businesses expanding into China and Canada and U.S. federal
tax issues that affect foreign investments into our region.
Our panelists for the program have extensive experience in the
fields of international tax, accountancy and business. They
include:
Gabe B. Gartner is the Director of Corporate
Tax Planning at Microsoft Corporation. His practice focuses
on federal income tax planning for domestic and international
transactions, including tax-deferred reorganizations of domestic
and foreign entities, taxable stock and asset acquisitions,
commercial joint ventures and inbound and outbound business
expansions.
John Shepherd has over 30 years experience in
corporate tax matters, with particular emphasis in international
cross-border transactions. John is currently the manager of
the international and federal tax group at Louisiana Pacific
Corporation, and he has served in similar roles at Pope &
Talbot, Inc., PacifiCorp and KPMG.
Ellen McMillan, CPA, has over 20 years experience
in corporate tax matters, focusing on U.S. planning and reporting
for international outbound tax operations. She is currently
the International Tax Manager at Tektronix, Inc. and was in a
similar position with NACCO Materials Handling Group. Ellen
was also a Corporate Tax Manager at Arthur Andersen LLP.
Mark McGinley, CPA, is an international tax
partner with Moss Adams LLP with over 28 years experience in
public accounting. He is the Oregon regional leader of Moss
Adams’ manufacturing and distribution industry group and has
served on the U.S. Department of Commerce District Export Council
for Southern Washington and Oregon since 2007.
Asa Altmark, CPA, is an international tax
senior manager with Grant Thornton LLP and has prior experience
at KPMG LLP. Asa assists multinational companies with
domestic and international tax and business planning,
specifically addressing international tax structuring, income tax
treaties and other international tax matters.
Brian Davis is a tax attorney and has practiced in
the international tax groups at the law firms of Morgan, Lewis
& Bockius LLP (Washington, D.C.), Sutherland Asbill &
Brennan LLP (Washington, D.C.), and Dorsey & Whitney LLP
(Seattle and New York). Brian earned his LL.M. in taxation
at New York University School of Law.

CLE and CPE Credits: |
The ILS will apply for two hours of general CLE credits
from the Oregon State Bar. The program meets the
general CPE requirements under the rules of the Oregon
