Presidential Recognition of Excellence in Exporting

History of the "E" Awards

During World War II, more than 4,000 "E Pennants" were presented to war plants in recognition of production excellence. The famous flag with the big "E" emblazoned on it became a badge of patriotism in action. President Kennedy revived the World War II "E" symbol of excellence to honor and provide recognition to America's exporters.

The "E" Certificate for Exports or Export Services

The President's "E" Certificate for Exports is awarded to a firm or organization that has made a substantial increase in its volume of exports over a sustained period, made a break into particularly competitive markets, introduced a new product for export, or opened markets previously closed to U.S. products.

The President's "E" Certificate for Export Service is awarded to organizations that may or may not export directly, but which assist or facilitate export efforts through either financing, transportation, market promotion, or other such services.

The "E" and "E Star" Awards for Exports or Export Services

The President's "E" Award Program was established by Executive Order on December 5, 1961, to afford suitable recognition to persons, firms, or organizations which contribute significantly in the effort to increase exports from United States. It is the mark of excellence for any firm engaged in exporting their manufactured good or service and for export service providers. The period of consideration for an "E" Award covers the most recent four years of export operation or export service.

The President's "E Star" Award was authorized in 1969 to recognize "E" Award winners for continued superior performance in increasing or promoting exports. Only previous recipients of the "E" Award are eligible. The period of consideration covers the most recent three years of export operation or export service; however no portion of the "E Star" period may overlap any portion of the "E" Award period. The level of performance must exceed that for which the "E" Award was given.

Winners of the "E" and "E Star" Award are authorized to fly the blue and white banner, to display the accompanying certificate of commendation which is signed by the Secretary of Commerce in the name and by the authority of the President, to wear and issue to employees an "E" lapel pin, and to refer to the award in their advertising.
