Most countries of the Western Hemisphere are engaged in regional trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Market of the South (MERCOSUR). Most are also involved in hemispheric negotiations to create a broad Free Trade Area for the Americas, and in global negotiations under the WTO to advance the Doha Development Agenda.
Given the loss of manufacturing jobs and outsourcing, free trade has become an election issue. The approval of Columbia Trade Agreement and concluding the Doha Round aimed at removing international barriers to trade in agriculture, manufactured goods and services along with renewing and expanding the Trade Adjustment Assistance program will vastily improve the situation.
Keynote Speaker: Mr. William Craft Jr., Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs .
