Martin Engineering, headquartered in Neponset, Illinois received an Export Achievement Certificate for successful entry into India. Congressman Jerry Weller (IL-11) presented the award to Marcelo Issak and Rusly Gunawan on behalf of the US Commercial Service. International Trade Specialist Shari Stout supported Martin by sharing market research regarding local business culture, payment terms, and comprehensive market assessment from the County Commercial Guide. TS Stout also assisted the firm by investigating references and potential licensee candidates. Thanks to the support of Congressman Weller’s office team in coordination with TS Stout, the new customers from India were able to be trained in the US in a timely manner. Kathy Swearingen of Martin stated, “The Peoria Group is always great to work with whatever question we may have. They are a great resource for our company.”

On August 1, 2006, Carus Chemical of Peru, Illinois, received an Export Achievement Certificate for increasing sales into Australia. Congressman Jerry Weller (IL-11) presented the award to Mike Wagner, International Sales Coordinator, on behalf of the US Commercial Service (CS) at the August 1, 2006, program highlighting federal export programs for small comapanies. During the ceremony, Carus remarked on the value of small companies working with the Commercial Service, stating that "CS supported our sales efforts in Canada, South Africa and the Middle East through the catalog show program. The program is good for building from which to build on. Carus also used Flexible Market Research in Thailand and Taiwan to help us save on travel costs and increase our efficiency. Carus has had excellent feedback from USDOC overseas offices and help us understand country culture along the way. Carus Chemical is the world leader in permanganate technology and world’s largest manufacturer of potassium permanganate. Carus is a provider of chemicals and services for water and wastewater treatment, air purification and other environmental applications.
Carus Chemical has been an environmental client of CS Peoria's Shari Stout since 1999, and a regular recipient information on world markets disseminated by the Commercial Service Environmental Technologies Team newsletter. In one edition, CS Sydney's Commercial Specialist John Kanawati produced the Access Australia project connecting US suppliers to environmental technology buyers in Australia. Access Australia helped Carus reach a database of more than 700 potential distributors and end-users of water and wastewater equipment. Mike Wagner, International Marketing Coordinator for Carus, reported that a $25,000 sale in to Australia-based Redox.

Export Achievements - - - Three Companies Receive U.S. Commerce
Department’s Export Achievement Awards
Carlos M. Gutierrez, Secretary of the U.S. Department of
Commerce, presented the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export
Achievement Certificate Award to three Illinois companies, Fuel
Tech, Inc. of Batavia; MacNeil Automotive Products Ltd. of
Downers Grove; and Sellstrom Manufacturing Company of Palatine,
during National Manufacturing Week, sponsored by the National
Association of Manufacturers. The award recognizes U.S. companies
that have benefited from the Department’s U.S. Commercial
Service’s programs and services to make their first export sale
or open new foreign markets.
Fuel Tech Inc. is a leader in post combustion nitrogen oxide control technologies, capable of reductions from 30% to 80%. Fuel Tech’s technologies are installed on over 350 combustion units worldwide. Working with the U.S. Commercial Service’s offices in Chicago and Libertyville, IL, as well as, in Beijing and Shanghai, the firm was awarded two contracts in the People’s Republic of China for the installation of the company’s technology on six different boilers, for a total of $15.3 million. As a result of exporting, the firm has also been able to hire additional employees.
MacNeil Automotive Products Ltd. is a manufacturer of automotive accessories, including floor mats, cargo and floor liners, side window deflectors, and a variety of other functional automotive accessories. MacNeil utilized the U.S. Commercial Service’s International Buyer Program and trade event information to meet key export contacts from Iceland at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Trade Show in Las Vegas. As a result, MacNeil was able to make a new-to-market sale to Iceland, and has made subsequent sales to the four other countries in Europe and Latin America. Exporting has also enabled the company to add new staff.
Sellstrom Manufacturing Company provides personal protective equipment to the world’s work force with over 1500 products such as goggles, protective eyewear, and welding helmets. The firm utilized Commercial Service generated product and country-specific information to evaluate and qualify target markets and partners. Sellstrom also made use of export counseling from the U.S. Commercial Service in Chicago to identify and qualify new opportunities. The company reports that exporting has significantly contributed to its growth over the last few years.
