Machine Tools
Japan is the world's largest producer of machine tools. It
produces approximately one-fifth of the world's value of machine
tools, estimated at $14.4 billion, up 7%, in 2007. It is
also the second-largest consumer, after only China (Gardner
Publications).
The Japanese machine tools market has never been so robust in the
past few years, with both domestic and imported products
expanding orders from domestic manufacturers. The current
upward trends have been primarily driven by the automotive
industry, spreading to auto parts suppliers and related
fabricators and molders. The IT industry's rush in the
capital investments for manufacturing of semiconductors, flat
panel displays and digital consumer products has fueled further
demand for machine tools and peripheral products.
In the metal cutting machine tools segment in 2007, U.S.
suppliers rank the second at 14% of the imported products after
Germany's 25%. Switzerland is the third largest supplier at
12%.
Analytical Instruments
Japan's analytical instruments industry has enjoyed its
continuous growth in the past several years, due to the recovery
in the corporate and governmental R&D investments, the boom
in exports and the new environmental and food safety
regulations.
The wide-ranging spectrum of user applications indicates that
anlalytical instruments as the core manufacturing and service
industry tools have vital roles in R&D, production,
inspection and monitoring processes.
Japan's $3.7 billion market for analytical instruments
presents U.S. suppliers of advanced technology ever-expanding
opportunities, as Japan focuses on four priority areas -- life
science, information technology, environment, and nano
technology/materials -- in coming years.
