The U.S. Commercial Service,
Japan offers a unique opportunity for students of economics,
business administration and related fields to gain hands-on,
real-world international government and business experience
through working in the Commercial Section of an American
diplomatic mission. Internships are available to U.S. and
Japanese citizens, and other foreign nationals with legal
residence in Japan. A reasonable level of functional Japanese
language ability is a priority.
Before applying, students should consider the costs and logistical aspects of performing an internship in Japan. Internships are voluntary and uncompensated, and interns are responsible for making all arrangements and assuming all costs for travel, housing, utilities, food, local transportation, insurance, and all other essentials. Acceptance into the internship program is contingent upon a favorable result from a security background check, which can take three months or longer to complete. Students who begin the application process at least six months in advance are best positioned to qualify for this opportunity.
Students who are interested and able to make the necessary arrangements for living in Japan should send a resume and statement of interest to: Tokyo.Office.Box@mail.doc.gov
