Trade show results – 10th China Fisheries & Seafood Expo in Guangzhou:

NOAA Fisheries Specialist Tom Asakawa participated in the 10th China Fisheries & Seafood Expo held November 10-12 in Guangzhou, China. This trade show appears to have added another very successful year, as the total participants accounted for approximately 370 organizations, 134 of which were overseas participants from 36 countries, including Taiwan and Hong Kong. U.S. participants totaled 20 organizations, including Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, the Western U.S. Agricultural Trade Association and the U.S. Agricultural Trade Office, Guangzhou. Asakawa was able to meet with many old contacts from both U.S. and China. He was also able to develop approximately 70 new importer clients. Chinese seafood demands appear to be more diversified now from traditional Alaska pollock, yellowfin sole and California loligo squid to others including salmon, king and snow crabs and jellyfish. Trade show results – 3rd Busan International Seafood & Fisheries Expo:

NOAA Fisheries Specialist Tom Asakawa participated in the third Busan International Seafood & Fisheries Expo held November 24-27 in Busan, Korea. The Expo housed approximately 180 organizations, including 55 overseas organizations from 23 countries. This year's Expo seems to have had less numbers of exhibitors and business visitors than the previous year. Since the schedule coincides with Thanksgiving Holiday, American companies are also discouraged to participate. ATO Seoul organized all U.S. participants (Southern U.S. Trade Association, Handy International, NOAA Fisheries and ATO Seoul) under a U.S. pavilion. They also organized a Great American Food Festival at Westin Chosun Hotel Busan in conjunction with the Expo. Chef John Maxwell from Virginia was the master chef for the hotel event and he also demonstrated SUSTA seafood (croaker, cownose ray, scallops, soft-shell crab, etc.) cooking at the Expo. General public seem to have outnumbered the business visitors at this year's Expo despite the first day should have been open only to business visitors. As a consequence, the number of new importer contacts made during this four-day event was unsatisfactory and an overall rating for the expo was disappointing. Seoul International Seafood Show, which is a business only show and scheduled for April 13-15, 2006, would be a better alternative.
