For U.S. firms interested in subcontracting opportunities
There may still be subcontracting opportunities associated with "Progetto C.a.s.e.". These are permanent structures (about 4,500 units) that will provide temporary housing to about 13,000 people, until their homes are rebuilt, in several locations in or near the town of L'Aquila. After the temporary occupants (i.e. those hit by the earthquake) vacate them, the buildings are then going to be used as student housing or tourist lodging. This project has been organized and patented directly by the Italian Civil Protection Department (Protezione Civile). Groups of 5 buildings, each 2 to 3 stories tall, will be anchored to reinforced concrete platforms having a surface of 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet) and seismically insulated (please note: these platforms have already been built). It is estimated that the first 1,000 houses can be completed by September 2009 and that overall construction will be completed by December 2009.
16 companies or consortia will be erecting the buildings within "Progetto C.a.s.e.". Some of the contractors plan on erecting steel structures with wood panels, others plan on erecting concrete structures and others plan on erecting wooden structures. Some of the building are already in place. A list of the 16 contractors can be found at: http://www.protezionecivile.it/cms/attach/graduatoriaofferenti1.pdf (please just consider the first 16 names)
If you are interested in subcontracting opportunities, we encourage you to contact the contractors listed above directly. Please note that the Italian Civil Protection Department does not welcome spontaneous submissions of information from companies that want to contribute to the reconstruction.
