6. Where can I find the denied persons list?
It is the job of the exporter to know his or her buyer as well as their background. If an exporter deals with or sells to a buyer who is on the US Bureau of Industry and Security’s (BIS) Denied Persons List, he or she will be held accountable and prosecuted. The list is available at the BIS website (http://www.bis.doc.gov/dpl/Default.shtm). It is advised to all exporters to check this list frequently, especially if they receive new clients.
7. Is there a website with information on common scams and frauds in the US or in foreign countries?
Our office has a list of recent frauds and scam alerts that we received from our offices in Washington D.C. and our foreign offices. You can find more information about these scams at our website at http://www.buyusa.gov/inlandempire/fraudalerts.html.
8. Is there an organization that can financially assist me with my export ventures?
Several governmental organizations can help you with export financing. The Export-Import Bank does not compete with private sector lenders but provides export-financing products that fill gaps in trade financing. They assume credit and country risks that the private sector is unable or unwilling to accept and also help to level the playing field for U.S. exporters by matching the financing that other governments provide to their exporters. More information can be found at its website at http://www.exim.gov.
The United States Small Business Administration also provides loans and export-financing services to small US exporters. More information of the SBA’s export-financing services can be found at http://www.sba.gov/oit/finance/index.html.
Multilateral development banks can also offer assistance with export-financing. More information can be found at http://www.export.gov/Advocacy/MDBs.html.
9. Where can I find a list of embargoed countries?
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has a list of embargoed countries, and the sanctions in place against them, at http://www.treasury.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/index.shtml. Read over this list before exporting.
