The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), in cooperation with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), is funding an infrastructure development mission to the United States for ten senior officials from Indonesia. This mission will directly support the strategy of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to make infrastructure development a pillar of the country's five-year economic development plan. In addition, this mission will serve to promote reconstruction following the recent earthquakes and tsunami.
Infrastructure modernization will help Indonesia to develop and realize its greater economic potential. The country has ambitious infrastructure plans and is seeking to advance trade and investment cooperation in such areas as energy and mining, transportation, telecommunications, and the environment. Last January, the Government of Indonesia announced a number of priority infrastructure projects for tender that are valued at approximately $22.5 billion. These infrastructure projects offer the potential for closer trade and economic ties between Indonesia and the United States. USTDA's infrastructure development mission will help to foster these ties.
The organization of this mission follows the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) negotiations, which were held earlier this year between Indonesia and the United States and led by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade and USTR. USTDA will arrange for ten delegates to travel to three metropolitan areas in the United States, to enter into cooperative discussions with U.S. private sector and government entities in the areas on energy and mining, transportation, telecommunications, and the environment. Public business briefings will provide opportunities for presentations by U.S. Government agencies, U.S. companies, and the Indonesian representatives. These events will allow U.S. firms the opportunity to understand how the potential TIFA agreements will facilitate trade and investment opportunities in Indonesia.
