Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators  repealed Directive 91/157/EEC and entered into force on September 26, 2006. It is the main legislation on batteries and is commonly referred to as the “batteries directive.”

The Corrigendum to Directive 2006/66/EC of September 6, 2006 changed the deadline for recycling processes to meet the recycling efficiencies and associated provisions of Directive 2006/66/EC from 2010 to 2011.

Directive 2008/12/EC of March 11, 2008 amended Directive 2006/66/EC regarding the procedures for amending “non-essential elements” of the Directive, such as methodologies for calculating annual sales.

Directive 2008/103/EC of November 19, 2008 amended Directive 2006/66/EC regarding placing batteries and accumulators on the market, specifying that batteries and accumulators legally placed on the EU market before September 26, 2008 but not complying with Directive 2006/66/EC could remain on the EU market after this date.

Commission Decision 2008/763/EC established a common methodology for calculating the annual sales of portable batteries and accumulators to end-users.
