U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) administers the
patent and trademark laws as they relate to the granting of
patents for utility inventions, designs and plants and the
issuing of trademark registrations. The USPTO examines
applications for patents and applications for trademark
registration. The USPTO publishes issued patents, approved
trademark registrations and various publications concerning
patents and trademarks; records assignments of patents and
trademarks. It maintains search rooms and a national network of
Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries.

Formerly Bureau of Export Administration (BXA). BIS's
activities include regulating the export of sensitive goods and

control and strategic trade issues; assisting U.S. industry to
comply with international arms control agreements; monitoring
the viability of the U.S. defense industrial base; and

across industry sectors to protect the nation's critical
infrastructures.
