Due to the impact of SARS in Guangdong province, Shenzhen Municipal Government and Shenzhen Environmental Protection Bureau has decided to build up a municipal medical waste treatment facility by the end of this year.
Shenzhen has 111 hospitals and 1,028 clinics. All those hospitals and clinics generate 12 tons medical waste everyday. Since Aug 15, 2002, Shenzhen has collected 492 tons medical waste and transferred to Shunde for comprehensive treatment everyday, another city in Shenzhen.According to Shenzhen municipal government, the medical waste is transferred to Shunde twice a day, which is 200 kilometers away from Shenzhen.
The main purpose of the construction of medical waste treatment facility is to prevent and control the spread of many of the viruses and infectious. It’s designed to meet the requirement for daily treatment capacity of 15 tons.
The local Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) will be responsible for the project. The project is supposed to be openly tendered and financed. Shenzhen Solid Waste Management Center is working on the stage of project tendering. The required medical waste treatment technologies will mainly focus on an incinerator with daily capacity of 15 tons of medical waste.
