The project will cover 6029 square meters, hold 5000 spectator seats, and cost approximately USD 3 million (RMB 26.5 million).

3) IOC, BOCOG Combine to Create Games Broadcaster

Year-long efforts by Beijing Olympic organizers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ensure the successful broadcasting of the 2008 Games have paid off, after Thursday's signing of a set of agreements that will lead to the establishment of the Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Co Ltd (BOB).
BOB -- a joint venture (JV) between the IOC Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) -- will serve as the host broadcaster of the 2008 Olympics and 2008 Paralympics.

The company will feed national and international TV and radio networks during the Games.

The agreements, including a co-operative JV contract, articles of association, and a master operating and management agreement, were inked by Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the IOC's co-ordination commission for the Beijing Games and OBS, Gilbert Felli, the executive director of the Games, and Liu Jingmin and Jiang Xiaoyu, who are BOCOG executive vice-presidents.

"The agreements constitute another milestone in BOCOG's Olympic broadcasting, marking the launch of the process to establish the Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Co Ltd," Jiang remarked at the signing ceremony.

Verbruggen also expressed his satisfaction.

"Doing the production by ourselves is something that does not always easily fit in to the existing structure and organization of Chinese broadcasting," he said.

"As the president of the board of OBS, I'm happy and really looking forward to the co-operation in broadcasting in the future."

According to the agreements, BOB will be in charge of producing international TV and radio signals for the Games and important side events, constructing and operating the International Broadcasting Centre and other venues, and providing other relevant broadcasting services to the rights-holding broadcasters of the Games.

As the Olympics is currently the most widely covered sporting event in the world, with the highest number of TV viewers, a successful broadcast is a prerequisite for staging a successful Olympics.

BOB was founded to insure the quality of broadcasting, reduce operational costs and leave a technological legacy for China's broadcasting industry.

It is estimated that during the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, more than 4 billion people will watch and listen to events.

4) Olympics to Lift Firms' Fortunes

US conglomerate General Electric (GE) and European information technology service company Atos Origin both plan to use the 2008 Beijing Olympics to strengthen their market presence in China.

As one of the 11 sponsors of the International Olympic Committee's global sponsorship program (TOP), GE believes this will help it build up its brand and sell more products in China, said GE CEO Jeff Immelt.

He made the remarks at the signing ceremony of the partnership between GE and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).

Immelt said his company will provide a host of products and services including the power generation, medical equipment, plastics, rail systems and water treatment for the 2008 Olympics.

"The sponsorship demonstrates our long-term commitment to China," said Immelt.

GE plans to raise its revenue in China to US$5 billion next year, from the 2003 figure of US$2.6 billion in 2003, said Immelt. It is also expected to increase its sourcing from China to US$5 billion in 2005.

China now has become GE's fastest growing market, with its annual revenue growing annually by more than 20 per cent over the past decade.

GE has already invested US$1.5 billion in China, with its business extending into sectors including aircraft generators, power generators, finance, medical equipment, plastics and television.

Atos Origin, the IOC's worldwide IT TOP partner from 2002 to 2008, said it will also actively participate in the Beijing Olympics and build a long-term partnership with China and Chinese enterprises.

"We hope our role as the sole chief IT system integrator for the Olympics in this period, especially in Beijing, can drive our growth in China," said Ping Lee, president of Atos Origin's North Asia operation.

The firm, Europe's biggest IT service provider, said it would set up a permanent office in Beijing in October to prepare for the 2008 Olympics.

By the time the games open, it will have as many as 450 people working in Beijing with more than 4,000 professionals managing IT systems.

5) Foundations Laid for Olympic Sailing Center

The foundations were laid Tuesday afternoon for the Qingdao International Sailing Centre for the 29th Olympics in 2008 at the former location of the Qingdao Beihai Shipyard.
The move marked the beginning of a new phase in the city's Olympics preparations.

Qingdao will host the 2008 Olympics Sailing Regatta.

The international sailing centre covers a total area of 45 hectares, said Qingdao Mayor Xia Geng.
It includes an Olympic village, and spots for administration, athletes, media, logistics and security. The overall construction area will reach 77,000 square metres.
The final blueprint is the result of more than two years of research and design by experts at home and abroad. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2006.
The international sailing centre will not only host the sailing events in 2008, but will also become a national marine sports training centre for both athletes and enthusiasts.
To date, preparation for the construction has been going smoothly.
The preparations include a huge "green Olympic" move from 2001-05 with a total investment of 3.4 billion yuan (US$411 million).
Chairman of the Co-ordinating Committee of International Olympics Committee Hein Verbruggen,vice-mayor of Beijing and vice-chairman of the Beijing Olympics Committee Liu Jingmin, and senior Qingdao officials participated in Tuesday's ceremony.

6) UN Nuclear watchdog to help with Security

The UN’s nuclear watchdog agency on Tuesday announced it would help Greece maintain security at the Athens Olympic Games in August.

The international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement it was asked last summer by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission and the Greek Olympics Games Security Division “ to provide expert advice and technical assistance.”

“The action plan is designed to protect facilities and materials, to detect illicit trafficking and malicious use of radioactive materials, and to ensure that emergency response forces are effective and efficient,” the agency added.

Greek authorities are also receiving help in this regard from France and the United States, the LAEA said.

This has enabled them to reinforce security at the Demokritos nuclear research reactor in an Athens suburb, and to keep better track of radioactive sources used at medical and industrial facilities in six Greek cities.

7) Olympic Organizers Cancel Contract with Australian Supplier

Athens organizers have cancelled a contract with an Australian frim to supply seats for the Olymic stadium just days after Cnberra was accused of stirring up trouble, officials said Thursday. New South Wales-based company Starena International signed a US$2.4 million contract in April to supply 75,000 seats for the main 2000 and the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996.

Starena managing director noel Carty said at the time it would take a “military-style operation” to supply the seats on time for the August 13 opening ceremony, but he was confident Athens organizers would deliver a “fantastic Games.”

The Sydney Morning herald newspaper reported a decision on a replacement supplier was yet to be made, just 80 days before the Games begin. The premier of News South Wales state, Bob Carr, said he was disappointed Athens organizers had cancelled the contract.
