The Bird Nest design, which is a joint effort by Herzog & de Meuron Architekten AG (H & de M) Switzerland and China Architecture Design & Research Group (CAG), won the National Stadium Design Competition held in October 2002, by a majority vote of the judges panel. This winning design will be utilized in the construction of the National Stadium for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Construction of the stadium will begin at 10 AM on December 24, 2003. Construction of another important Olympics 2008 project, the National Swimming Center, will begin at 10 AM on December 12, 2003. This beginning will mark the first stage of Olympic 2008 project construction.

2. Beijing Olympic Marketing Launch Postponed by SARS

(Source: http://olympic.bjinvest.gov.cn/news)

Beijing Olympic organizers have postponed plans to launch the marketing program for the 2008 Olympics in May. The launch of the logo originally scheduled for May 25 also be postponed.
The current SARS epidemic in Beijing and the World Health Organization advisories against non-essential travel to China is strongly considered to be the major influencing factor behind this decision. Although preparations for the 2008 Olympics have been affected in the first half of this year, from the long term perspective, the SARS epidemic is not expected to disturb the normal operation of the Beijing Olympic Committee (BOCOG).
