1. Guangdong to Build New Chaoshan Airport

Recently released by Provincial Airport Administration Group Corp., the Chaoshan Airport project is scheduled to start construction by the end of this year. The site of the subject airport has been selected near Tian’e hill at the border of Paotai Town and Denggang Town in the Jiedong County of Jieyang City. The Group estimates that passengers would reach three million annually after the first 3-5 years of operation. Soon after the new airport is operational, the existing Shantou Airport would be returned for military use.

It was also released that the total investment would reach USD 278 million (RMB 2.3 billion), in which the Provincial Airport Administration Group Corp. would provide 60%, China Southern Airlines 25%, and local Jieyang, Shantou, and Chaozhou governments would cover the remaining 15%.
The location of the new Chaoshan Airport is about 20 kilometers from the downtown areas of Shantou city, Chaozhou city, and Jieyang city. The new airport would be connected by several highways that would also provide convenient transportation network for the east part of Guangdong Province and the southern part of Fujian Province.

2. The Largest International Hospital to be built in Beijing

After 4 years of preparation, the Peking University International Hospital project was finally approved by the Beijing Municipal Planning Commission, and plans project the building to start during November 2005, and operation during 2007. Total investment is USD300 million (RMB 2.48 billion), wholly raised by Peking University International Hospital Investment Management Co. Ltd.

This new international hospital is located in Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park of Zhangping District, in the northwest part of Beijing. 3. Clinical Test Standard in PLA General Hospital in line with the International Standards

Recently, the experts from the China National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (CNAL) completed an on-site accreditation of the Clinical Test Department of the General Hospital of People’s Liberation Army (PLA), marking the first step of domestic clinical test science towards international standardization. This is the first accreditation conducted by China for a hospital’s clinical test department with adoption of international standards since the international standardization organization promulgated the international medical clinical construction standard “Special Requirements for Quality Control and Ability of Medical Laboratories”.

With more than three years of preparation, the Clinical Test Department of the General Hospital of PLA became China’s first applicant for ISO15189 certification. The quality system is believed to have reached the requirement of this quality standard in general.

According to Professor Cong Yulong, one of the Directors from China Medical Association’s Clinical Test Sub-council, this standard has been internationally adopted with an objective of standardizing the construction of medical laboratory and guaranteeing the test accuracy and improving the testing level. The certified laboratories are up to the international standard in terms of management, quality control, and services and will get international mutual recognition in terms of drug evaluation, clinical sample test. So, the test report issued by the lab will also be recognized outside China.

Consulate News: Guangzhou

In keeping with our goal of making the CCB a more integrated publication, our four China branch offices - Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenyang - submit consulate news to the CCB on a rotating schedule. This week, we are pleased to feature a contribution from CS Guangzhou.

3M, which was the first joint venture outside special economic zones established in China, celebrated this week its 20 anniversary of innovation in China. At the invitation of 3M's Managing Directors, Martin Alintuck (Beijing) and Kenneth Yu (Shanghai), CS Guangzhou's PCO Mike Murphy was the featured speaker at the gala event held in Guangzhou. The opening ceremony highlighted 3M's advanced technological developments (500 a year!) and saw heavy coverage by television and print media, and crowds exceeding several hundred.
