GOVERNOR-LED TRADE MISSION TO CHILE AND ARGENTINA
Governor Bob Riley is leading a trade mission to Santiago, Chile and Buenos Aires, Argentina May 31 to June 7, 2008. The multi-industry mission will focus on matching participating Alabama companies with qualified agents, distributors, representatives, end-users and joint venture partners in these markets. The mission is aimed at companies interested in entering or increasing their business in the Chilean and/or Argentine markets, and will be coordinated by the Alabama Development Office and the Export Alabama Trade Alliance.
The trade mission’s goal is to gain first-hand market information and provide access to key government officials and/or potential business partners for Alabama companies desiring to enter these promising markets. The trade mission will consist of five business days. A market briefing will take place in both countries highlighting opportunities in the various industry sectors. Scheduled one-on-one appointments will be arranged prior to the trip with potential business partners for each participant. A series of networking events will also take place.
Between 2005 and 2007, Alabama exports to Chile grew from $27.8 million to $67.3 million, an increase of over 141%. The Chilean market obviously offers tremendous opportunities to Alabama companies. Alabama’s top exports to Chile include vehicles, organic chemicals, paper & paperboard articles and industrial machinery (including computers).
For additional information on the trade mission, please contact Beau Lore, Alabama Development Office, International Trade Division at 334-353-0299 or james.lore@ado.alabama.gov .
DaimlerChrysler’s auto sales in Chile jumped 50 percent since implementation of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA), thanks to tariff reductions and a decrease in Chile’s auto luxury tax. The FTA included an obligation requiring Chile to eliminate its 85 percent luxury tax on autos over a four-year period. The U.S. auto industry will likely continue to enjoy increased auto sales in Chile because as of January 1, 2007, Chile’s four-year transition period officially ended and its auto luxury tax has been completely phased out.
