Arizona's Exports Rise in 2008
(Phoenix, AZ) – Indicating there are some bright spots in Arizona’s economy, foreign countries continued to show their desire to purchase Arizona-made products last year, as exports from the state to the rest of the world grew by more than a half-billion dollars from 2007, a 2.68% increase to $19.74 billion.
New data from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Arizona Department of Commerce indicate electrical machinery was the most in-demand, accounting for $7.2 billion in exports, followed by machinery, with $3.1 billion. The biggest percentage increase occurred in ores/slag/ash, which grew 71.44% from more than $760-thousand in 2007 to $1.3 billion in 2008.
Other products that showed significant demand increases include optics/medical instruments (up 9.23% from 2007) and vehicles (up 11.41%).
“This is good economic news in the midst of challenging times,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “Growing stable jobs is our highest priority, and it involves a number of different initiatives, including continuing to offer assistance to Arizona businesses to help them bring in new dollars – and employment – through exports. A comprehensive approach to creating and sustaining jobs for our citizens will be vital to our success.”
Mexico remains Arizona’s largest trading partner, with $5.9 billion in goods purchased last year (from $5.2 billion in 2007). Canada continues to rank 2nd, with nearly $2.3 billion in exports for 2008 ($2.19 billion in 2007). Other nations that stepped up demand for Arizona-made products include the United Kingdom (up 5.63%), Taiwan (up 13.02%) and France (up 18.79%).
“When it comes down to high-quality goods, our global partners take advantage of their working relationship with suppliers here and buy Arizona-made,” said Kent Ennis, Interim Director of the Arizona Department of Commerce.
“Our partnership with Arizona to assist local businesses enables companies to seek alternative sources of revenue through exports when economic times are slow here in the United States,” said Eric Nielsen of the U.S. Commercial Service in Tucson. “Exporting creates jobs, and we encourage businesses who haven’t thought about entering the global marketplace to consider the option.”
Since 2006 data, Arizona’s exports have grown by more than $1.4 billion. The majority of firms that export are classified as small- to medium-sized businesses.

Attention: New Marking Requirements in Saudi Arabia
Effective February 1, the Saudi Customs Authority issued a strict directive stating that the "Country of Origin/Made in…" mark must be identified (engraved or affixed – non-removable sticker) on each item of a shipment. The mark must also be printed on any boxes or cartons. The Certificate of Origin must mention the same details. Any shipments or items arriving without the proper "Country of Origin/Made in…" mark will be refused entry and returned (re-exported), without prior notice, to its origin at the shipper's or consignee's expense.
These regulations are effective February 1 for all shipments arriving at the ports and airports of Jeddah, Dammam, and Riyadh. Failure to follow these new regulations will be treated as a serious offense. The importer of record will be fully responsible for any delays and cost incurred against port penalties, demurrage, detention charges, extra manpower, and related charges.
Please contact Kristian Richardson at Krichardson@mail.doc.gov if you need further assistance.
